2018 Summary - Part 1 - Kings of War

Greetings!

The end of the year is always a good opportunity to look back and reflect upon the plans and goals made 365 days ago. There are a few hours left of 2018 and I am very happy to say that by all means it was a good year. Also for the hobby!

I find it quite interesting to see what I planned and achieved in the last year but also to notice that there were some surprised and unexpected turns of events. However, these were not bad experiences, quite the contrary. It simply reminds me that one should be always prepared to seize the moment when new opportunity arises. Even it may often mean rearrangement of the initial plans.

2018 was certainly such a year for me and for that reason I titled this post: 2018 - Part 1. It is because there was a little unexpected development of my hobby interests. But that will be covered in Part 2. First post it dedicated to Kings of War, the game I greatly enjoyed playing this year. And I by all means I want to invest even more into in  2019!

There are a few aspects I would like to cover that are related to Kings of War as a system, so let's start with the games!

Game 105 - Night Stalkers - 2018/12/27

Greetings!

Last few months I played regular games against Jeff using Universal Battle 2.  It was a great series of battles and it seemed quite fitting that the very last game of 2018 for me would be against Jeff and his Night Stalkers army.

It was also another great opportunity to play under new Clash of Kings 2019 updated rules. There is quite a lot to consider now, I must admit, so to resist the temptation to change too many things at the same time, I followed my own rule and tried to stick to the same army I played with last time.

Jeff usually has the opposite approach and he tries to test as many things as possible. However, he kept the same faction, Night Stalkers and it seemed to me that the core of the army remained the same. It is all about those additional heroes and units he incorporates in his force that make the difference in the end. Here are the details of his army for this game:

Night Stalkers - Army List

40 Scarecrows, Infantry, Horde, Shambling
- Dread-Fiend, Hero, Large Cavalry,  Crushing Strength (2), Vicious, Nimble
- 10 Phantoms, Infantry, Troop, Crushing Strength (1), Fly, Shambling

Game 104 - League of Rhordia - 2018/12/26

Greetings!

It seems to me that Universal Battle 2 platform gains more and more popularity among Kings of War players. Thanks to that I had a great pleasure to have a game against a player I have never played before. Although I bet we attended some tournaments together, it just happened that we did not end up playing against each other then.

Jeff wanted to use this opportunity to get more familiar with Universal Battle as well. But what better way than to play the game and simply discuss subtleties of the platform during the battle?

I am always happy to share what I know about it. The more players embark on it - the better! What is more Jeff is also playing with not that popular faction among Kings of War players - League of Rhordia. This faction seem to have quite a lot of options in terms of army composition so I was very curious what are the units Jeff likes the most.

On top of that we have just received our copies of CoK2019 and were very keen to try out new options and implement changes as soon as possible.

Here are the details of the army list Jeff brought to our game:

League of Rhordia - Army List

6 Honor Guard, Horde, Large Cavalry, Crushing Strength (1), Thunderous Charge (2), Iron Resolve, Maccwar’s Potion of the Caterpillar

Game 103 - Night Stalkers - 2018/12/25

Greetings!

Since the next big tournament, Australian Clash of Kings, is increasing the size of the armies to 2250 points, Jeff and I decided to start playing at this level.

We came back to our respective armies. I used the opportunity to add completely new elements to the army.

Please note that we played that game prior to the release of CoK2019 so the army lists were composed under the rules for CoK2018.

Jeff made some changes to the core of the force and also added something new. It is still, however, the force with Night Stalkers as the main army and Trident Realm allies.

Night Stalkers - Army List

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 16 - 2018/12/15

Hello!

It seems that the interest in Mortem Et Gloriam is growing and more players decide to give it a go. I was very happy I could meet David and introduce him to the new system.

It also happened that a small one day event was organized in Canberra, MiniMeG II and it seemed like a perfect coincidence to have an introductory game and a practice battle at the same time. Since MiniMeG was organized as an opportunity for new players to learn the basics of the game, it was limited to 7000 points per army. We were also using Magna version of the rules, meaning that units would be smaller. However, the assumption was that it would allow to play games in shorter period of time too.

David said he has a few armies but Teutonic Order seemed to be the easiest one to prepare to the new format and system, so he went for this force this time. I played against Medieval armies before and I found it quite interesting regardless of the historical inaccuracy. Here are the details of the army David brought to our game (I apologize in advance for any mistakes and/or inconsistencies):

Teutonic Orders - Army List

Subordinate General 1 - Competent Professional

Game 102 - Night Stalkers vs Abyssal Dwarfs - 2018/12/01

Greetings!

Today's report is going to be a bit different. Jeff and I have played quite a few games so far in order to help him decide on the army list he wanted to take to Australian Masters. He made a final call and submitted his army list. It was Night Stalkers force with Trident Realm allies.

The interesting part about Australian Masters is that the first round is decided by the position in the ranking (so 1st player plays vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th and so on) and it is also an army swap battle. It means that players are going to use their opponent's army to fight against their own force.

As a part of the preparation Jeff wanted to have a game in such setting. I was more than happy to play with his force! In fact, I got a chance to play with it before him, as he has not used it yet at that stage! Here are the details of his army list:

Night Stalkers - Army List

40 Scarecrows, Infantry, Horde, Shambling
- Void Lurker, Hero, Monster, Crushing Strength (2), Fly, Regeneration (5+), Thunderous Charge (1), This unit is not Stealthy, Darklord’s Onyx Ring

- Thuul Mythican, Hero, Infantry, Crushing Strength (1), Ensnare, Individual, Inspiring (Thuul Only), Stealthy

It turned out that Jeff would be playing with Abyssal Dwarfs with some Forces of the Abyss allies against his own force. Here is the list:

Game 101 - Night Stalkers - 2018/11/26

Greetings!

As the deadline to submit army lists for Australian Masters was getting closer, the preparation intensified.  I tried to find time for more frequent games so that Jeff could finalize the version of his force. This time he decided to test yet another idea, Night Stalkers with Abyssal Dwarves allies.

Allied contingent is always an interesting option. For some, it may merely be a way to address the issue they perceive they chosen faction has. For others, it is a great opportunity to further personalize the army they play with. Even more so if that contributes to new modelling and painting projects.

Whatever the reason, it almost always makes the army look more varied as by default there is higher degree of diversity thanks to the presence of different units.

Here are the details of the army Jeff took this time:

Night Stalkers - Army List

40 Scarecrows, Infantry, Horde, Shambling
- Void Lurker, Hero, Monster, Crushing Strength (2), Fly, Regeneration (5+), Thunderous Charge (1), This unit is not Stealthy, Darklord’s Onyx Ring

- 10 Spectres, Infantry, Troop, Firebolt, Pathfinder, Piercing(1)

3 Fiends, Large Cavalry, Regiment, Crushing Strength (1), Vicious

Game 100 - Night Stalkers - 2018/11/19

Greetings!

After more than 3 years since I switched to Kings of War as the fantasy system of choice, I have just reached quite a milestone. 100 officially documented games in Kings of War! I am really happy about it and I just wish I reached it earlier :D

It was a very interesting journey and I plan to continue on this path. Clash of Kings 2019 supplement is around the corner and it seems that despite other distractions, I will be playing Kings of War for another year!

It seemed quite fitting that 100th game happened to be against Jeff too! I have been playing against him and his varied armies for some time lately. All of them, without any doubt, were great fun and I believe I learned a lot from the Master himself. It may be difficult sometimes to stand up after another defeat but I keep trying to find a way to victory. :)

He brought Night Stalkers to the game again but with some modifications:

Night Stalkers - Army List

40 Scarecrows, Infantry, Horde, Shambling
- Void Lurker, Hero, Monster, Crushing Strength (2), Fly, Regeneration (5+), Thunderous Charge (1), This unit is not Stealthy

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 15 - 2018/11/10

Hello!

The most recent battle of Mortem et Gloriam saw my Seleucids fighting against Romans, this time of a Foederate flavor, commanded by Paul against whom I have played before. It was, thus, kind of a rematch or another installment of our sport rivalry!

I have not yet had a chance to play this type of the Roman army so I was really curious what is it going to look like. My first impression was that I am about to play against cavalry heavy army and it looks like my Seleucids are quite outnumbered in that department. Here are the details:

Game 99 - Night Stalkers - 2018/11/05

Greetings!

The tournament season in Australia has just come to an end and that means that top players are preparing for the Masters tournament. It will take place in Melbourne this year and will be held by the end of November.

As a defending Master, Jeff is understandably looking for the opportunities to prepare and play test potential armies for that event. I heard rumors that he even employed a sparring partner from UK to help him develop some new ideas to surprise the opponents at the tournament! :)

I am glad I can also be included in the preparations, so not only I have a continuous opportunity to learn from Jeff but contribute to his preparations as well. The most interesting part, however, is that while I may be showcasing some variation of the army list Jeff is considering for taking today, I can almost guarantee that the army he will be playing with at the tournament is going to be different. Jeff tells me that he does not yet know himself what army he is going to take, so no worries, no secrets are revealed!

This time I was about to face Night Stalkers army. It could not be better timing with all the Vanguard releases, Halloween etc. Here are the details of the army list Jeff used:

Night Stalkers - Army List

40 Scarecrows, Infantry, Horde, Shambling
- Void Lurker, Hero, Monster, Crushing Strength (2), Fly, Regeneration (5+), Thunderous Charge (1), This unit is not Stealthy

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 14 - 2018/10/30

Greetings!

I have just had another great opportunity to play against Steve, a very experienced wargamer, against whose Arab Conquest army I played some time ago. I was very happy to have a re-match as I was looking for another opportunity to learn from Steve and see if I learned lessons from our previous game properly.

This time we upped the armies size to 11,000 but I was again using Britcon version to get prepared for the price increase for the Phalangites.

In addition, Steve was hosting the game as well so I was to play in a comfortable environment without usual crowd present at the store.

Steve decided to use his favorite Arab Conquest army again with a few additions to bring the army to 11,000 points.

Game 98 - Empire of Dust - 2018/10/13

Greetings!

It's been a while since I have played against my fellow Wooden Spoon Master from UK so it was great to catch up with Ed again!

This year Ed plays mainly with his Empire of Dust army and he decided to bring it to the battle field this time too.

I didn't have many opportunities to play against this faction which is a shame because it has a very unique play style and look. I was curious what Ed is going to focus on and here are the details of the army he used in our game:

40 Revenants, Horde, Infantry, Lifeleech(1), Shambling, Brew of Strength
- Bone Giant, Monster, Brutal, Crushing Strength(3), Lifeleech(1), Shambling, Strider

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 13 - 2018/10/10

Greetings!

It has been a while since my last game so I was very happy that the opportunity presented itself to take the army of Seleucids again. This time against Mid-Republican Romans with Numidian Allies (around 200 BCE)! Perfect historical match up and the one I was looking forward to as well. It was due to the fact that my opponent, Rob, has just finished painting his Roman army and we tried to find time to test it.

I must say that the army looks fantastic! It was absolute pleasure to look at it from the other side of the table. It is also quite tempting to run by myself, if only to try a different style of warfare.

It was also kind of a rematch because I played against Rob during WinterCon where he brought his medieval French army and won! I was eager to do better this time for sure!

I suggested that since it was announced that the tournament during upcoming CanCon2019 will be at 11,000 points we should try that as well. Rob agreed! Here are the details of the force he commanded:

Mid-Republican Romans - Army List

Subordinate General 1 - Competent Professional
Subordinate General 2 - Mediocre Professional
Allied General - Competent Instintive

Game 97 - Forces of the Abyss - 2018/10/01

Greetings!

In the next game against Jeff (7th and counting!) I had a new force to try and defeat. This time it was to be the army from the Forces of the Abyss faction.

I must say that I have not had many opportunities to play against this faction so far. It is quite interesting because it is one of the iconic Mantic force, with a selection of original Mantic models to choose from. However, it seems that, at least among the potential opponents, it is not popular.

Combine that with Jeff's ability of designing unique army lists anyway, I expected something unexpected! Jeff was kind enough to let me know what the army is going to be some time before the battle took place. And indeed, I was not disappointed at all, the army was not what I could think of as a possible Abyssals force. Here are the details:

Forces of the Abyss - Army List

6 Tortured Souls, Horde, Large Infantry, Crushing Strength (1), Thunderous Charge (1), Fly, Lifeleech (2), Shambling
- The Well of Souls[1] , Hero (Monster), Crushing Strength (2), Fly, Inspiring, Lifeleech (5), Shambling, Soul Drain

Game 96 - Goblins - 2018/09/23

Greetings!

In the next installment of our sport rivalry in the Kings of War arena, Jeff and I played another game on Universal Battle 2.  And while I stubbornly stick to the very same faction and even the very same army list, Jeff has a completely opposite approach. You can be certain that he almost never brings the same army list to the game twice in a row. And quite often, not even from the same faction.

It was exactly the case this time as well. The only limitation Jeff imposes is that he needs to have the models to field the force in traditional games. However, as he has a large collection of armies available it is not a huge limitation anyway.

This time I was about to face the army from the Goblin faction and as it is often the case, it was nothing I have played against so far. It is probably also the result of not playing against Goblins that much in general but then Jeff tends to bring armies that are often different to what one may expect.

Goblins - Army List

6 Trolls, Horde, Large Infantry, Crushing Strength (2), Regeneration (5+), Chalice of Wrath
- Troll Bruiser, Hero, Large Infantry, Crushing Strength (3), Inspiring (Trolls Only), Nimble, Regeneration (5+), Blade of Slashing

6 Trolls, Horde, Large Infantry, Crushing Strength (2), Regeneration (5+), Staying Stone

Game 95 - Brotherhood - 2018/09/15

Greetings!

After a few games using Trident Realms, Jeff decided it is time for a bigger change. He chose Brotherhood and on top of that he also decided to use one of the available formations for this faction - Last Stand.

I didn't know what exactly Jeff is going to bring but he gave me a little spoiler. There will be no cavalry unit in his army.

That was very intriguing. I have already noticed that Jeff designs his armies in a unique way but this sounded like bringing the game to a completely different level! I also knew it is a trap!

Brotherhood - Army List

40 Villein Martyrs, Horde, Regeneration (6+)
- Forsaken Beast, Monster, Breath Attack (10), Ensnare
- Exemplar, Hero, Mounted, Crushing Strength (1), Thunderous Charge (1), Headstrong, Individual, Valiant, Blade of Slashing

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 12 - 2018/09/13

Greetings!

My next game was against the most recent overall winner of WinterCon 2018 - Stephen! It was a fantastic opportunity for me because it is always  great to learn from the best. I even thought that I may play against Stephen after day 1 at WinterCon but it was not to be.

Stephen brought his favorite Arab Conquest, the army that he used so effectively at the tournament. Once again, I was about to face the faction I have never played before. I knew I was about to learn a lot for sure!

One of the interesting aspects of Stephen's army is that he does not have Skirmishers. At least not dedicated ones, as some of the units are Flexible. That creates a very interesting force that has quite a high break point. Another element that was very intriguing was the fact that he had two Talented generals. Here are the details of the army although I need to apologize as I do not remember all of the aspects. In particular, I cannot recall which if any of his cavalry units were Superior. For time being I am assuming they were not and I am going to correct it if it was not the case:

Game 94 - Trident Realm - 2018/09/10

Greetings!

My training under the watchful eye of Jeff the Australian Master continues! I am really grateful for giving me constant opportunity to play against him. Fortunately, he does not mind me playing with the same army over and over again. He, on the other hand, has something slightly different every game, even if he is using the force from the same faction.

In this game Jeff used Trident Realms one more time. We had quite close battles so far and I hoped I would be able to use the prior lessons to some effect now. The challenge was in the fact that small changes to the army list, combined with Jeff's skills, scenario and terrain always created a unique situation. No matter what I had to be ready to adapt to the circumstances quickly.

Here are the details of the army list Jeff had in this game (unfortunately, I cannot recall the items):

Trident Realms - Army List

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 11 - 2018/09/08

Greetings!

In the last game of WinterCon 2018 I played against Mitchell and his Spanish - Sertorian army. I remembered him from the very first event I took part in but back then I had no opportunity to play against him.

Spanish - Sertorian is another faction I have had no opportunity to play against before so I was very curious about it. I vaguely remembered that it may be an army that has a mix of Iberian and Roman troops, perhaps with a bit of cavalry and skirmishers too. It was also the very first time I was about to play against the army with Legendary Professional Army Commander - Sertorius himself!

Here are the details of the army list Mitchell had (at least as I remember it):

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 10 - 2018/09/06

Greetings!

Day one of WinterCon 2018 tournament was over and we learned who are our opponents for the first game on day two. This time I was about to play against Rob who brought his 100 Years' War French army. We attempted to organize a game before the event but it didn't quite work out. It was great then that we could play against each other during the event!

It was a bit odd match up if you look at it from the historical point of view. But I decided to consider the Knights as special type of Cataphracts. Rob also ensured me that his Roman army is currently being painted so there was a chance for a historically accurate re-match too!

Apart from the Knights Rob brought quite a large number of units armed with Crossbows or Longbows too. Here are the details:

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 9 - 2018/09/02

Greetings!

In my second game of Mortem et Gloriam event at WinterCon2018 I played against Craig who commanded an army of Pechenegs. This force was something I have never faced before. Unlike all the armies I have played so far, this one had more SuG's than TuG's and was all mounted. In other words, plenty of horse archers to lure my own force into a trap.

I also learned that Craig has been playing various historical games for years. It meant that I was about to have a game against unknown army led by a very experienced commander. I didn't quite want to repeat the mistakes of Crassus at Carrhae so I decided that I need to be very cautious and keep the army together no matter what.

If you are interested in Craig's report on the very same battle (and all his games he played at WinterCon), here is the link to his post at MeG forum:

Here are the details of the army Craig brought to the event:

Mortem et Gloriam - Game 8 - 2018/08/24

Greetings!

This is the first battle report from the event called WinterCon 2018 that took place in Canberra on 21-22 July 2018. There were quite a few tournaments for various games and system. Luckily Dean from Olympian Games organized one for Mortem et Gloriam enthusiasts.

It was quite relaxed, open format tournament where participants had to bring 10000 strong armies. Other than that there were no restrictions and we played 2 games each day. It meant that we had quite a lot of time for each game. It was good news for many of us who have only recently started learning the intricacies of the system.

If you are interested, here is the video from the event that nicely shows what games were represented. For MeG players the interview with Dean will definitely be an interesting one (MeG contents starts around 24:00 minutes):

In my first game I was about to play against Paul for whom it was the very first game in Mortem et Gloriam. It was my pleasure to try and pass on all the things I have learned in my few games so far. Paul brought the army of Classical Indian which he painted beautifully in just a few weeks time! I have never had a chance to play against such a force before so it was becoming more and more interesting. Especially, that one can imagine that it was one of the historical campaigns of the Seleucids in the East.

Here are more details of the army Paul brought. I must apologize in advance as I realized I made some mistakes in the diagrams. First, I considered a single TuG as two (I think they were Javelinmen) and then I noticed that I did not add one TuG (it appeared on the diagrams at some stage). I also tried to recall which infantry units were actually present so I hope the list is acceptable in terms of following the flow of battle. If I get the correct version I will definitely update it accordingly.
