Game 163 - Twilight Kin - 2022/10/23

Greetings!

It's been a while since my last battle report. Once again, real life had quite a lot of "distractions" in store for me in the last half a year. As a result, I had very little spare time for hobby in general.

I am thus grateful that Duncan reached out to me and suggested a game by email. It helped me to rekindle the interest in Kings of War and to try an carve out some time for the hobby, no matter what. I also want to take this opportunity and thank Duncan for his great patience, especially in the period prior to commencing the battle.

I have never had an opportunity to play against Duncan before. I met him virtually in March when he attended Monster March together with his daughter and submitted some really cool models! So it was great to have the opportunity to play the game together as well. What is more, he also decided to field his Twilight Kin. The army I have played before only once. Considering it is currently being heavily reworked before its new incarnation is going to be published, I thought it is going to be an interesting battle.

Twilight Kin has any interesting units to choose from and I did not know what to expect. Here is what Duncan decided to bring this time. Both armies were at 2000 points:

Twilight Kin - Army List

Blade Dancer Neophytes Horde (N), Infantry, Fire-Oil - 205

Game 162 - Forces of Nature - 2022/04/23

Greetings!

Welcome to my most recent battle report! It took me some time to organize a game (again!) but fortunately, I was able to do so. It was played on a freshly updated Universal Battle 2 platform. This time I had a great pleasure to play against Ed and his Forces of Nature army.

It's been a while since our last game so I was really happy to catch up and play again. Ed has been running variations of the Forces of Nature army for some time, including the formation. However, this time he did not use this particular option. The army list offers nice variety and provides a lot of options to choose from.

Here is the army Ed chose for our game:

Centaurs & Elementals - Army List

Earth Elementals Horde (EE1), Large Infantry - 220
Fire Elementals Horde (FE), Large Infantry - 220

Earth Elementals Regiment (EE2), Large Infantry - 130

Game 161 - Dwarfs - 2021/01/30

Greetings!

I was very nicely surprised when after I posted about my very first game in Play By Email, I learned that quite a number of players use this way. I also receive a few generous offers to play this way, so I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who reached out! I will definitely find time to organize a game against everyone who contacted me.

In the meantime, a sort of rematch was scheduled already. This time, however, Erasmus decided to use another force of his - The Dwarfs of the Fool's Hold! You should check how the army looks like in real life and read their story too!

Game 160 - Salamanders - 2022/01/23

Greetings!

It has been some time since I played a game of Kings of War "live", either with real models or online. It was thus a great that when Karl reached out to offer me a game on Tabletop Simulator I had some spare time to do so. It was our long overdue re-match too! We played our first game almost exactly a year ago. You can check it here if you are interested:

Game 152 - Salamanders - 2021/01/26

If you are interested in playing Kings of War on Tabletop Simulator platform, I highly recommend you read Karl's article on Mantic Blog:

How to play Kings of War on Tabletop Simulator

And check all the goodies Karl prepared for you on this FB group:

Kings of War - Tabletop Simulator

There are a lot of very useful functionalities built in now, that make the experience even more smooth and user friendly. I also learned that you can have moving models as well, in the same way as they are in computer games! I hope I am going to find some time in the future to play with that and create more personalized version of my own as well.

Karl brought his trusty Salamanders again and we both had some updates to our respective army lists since last time. Here are the details of the army list of Karl's Salamanders:

Salamanders - Army List

Salamander Ceremonial Guard Horde (SC), Heavy Infantry - 265
Tyrants Horde (T1), Large Infantry - 240

Game 159 - Night Stalkers - 2021/12/28

Greetings!

It's been a while since my last battle report. I had far less spare time for hobby in general, let alone for playing games in 2021. That's what happens when you welcome a new family member in your life :) Fortunately, Erasmus (aka DarkBlack on forums and UB2), who seem to be in a similar situation, came up with a brilliant idea of how to help another new dad not to lose touch with the hobby completely. He reached out and suggested we use Universal Battle 2, with its great feature of saving games, to ... Play By Email!

If you have never hear of this way, I recommend you check this video by everyone's favourite KoW community member:

Death by Dragons - How to use UB2 to play KoW by email!

In short, you play on UB2 one turn at a time, on your own, whenever you have a bit of a spare moment to do so. It is obviously not the same as playing a full game in one go. But when you are not able to reliably lock 2-3 hours at particular time of the day, then this is a perfect solution.

A huge "Thank You!" to Erasmus for reaching out and suggesting we play this way. And even more so for being extremely patient, as it took me quite a long time before we could finally begin our first game. However, when we finally started, all went smoothly and we were able to play a turn each almost every day.

I must admit that there are some aspects of this way of playing the game I like a lot! For example, I really like that I can take it easy and think a bit about my moves without time pressure. Interestingly, it does not result in me spending a lot to make the moves. It is more about the comfort of doing it at the pace I wanted. This was quite important when everything else in life seemed to be quite hectic, changing fast and quite unpredictable! Hence, a bit of peace to enjoy the hobby was exactly what I needed.

For our first game by email, my opponent chose his Night Stalker army. I consider this faction to be an archenemy for the Elves so I was thrilled to fight against it. It can be equally fast but is also significantly different in many aspects. Perfect enemy for an interesting game!

What is more, COK2022 was released just prior to when we decided to begin and we both modified our armies accordingly. Erasmus tells me he didn't change much in his force but since a number of units in the Night Stalkers list were updated, there was a lot to try out as if it was new! For me, I also tried to keep my army as similar to the one I used last time as possible. But as you will see, the same units may have gained some new options and I was curious how would they do this time.

We decided to play at 2000 per side. Here are the details of the Night Stalker army:

Tentacle Street Sneakery Club - Army List

Scarecrows Horde (SC), Infantry, Screamshard - 135
Butchers Horde (B1), Large Infantry - 205
Butchers Horde (B2), Large Infantry - 205

Dopplegangers (D), Infantry - 145

Game 158 - Ratkin - 2021/04/25

Greetings!

After I played against Ed and his Free Dwarfs, I had a fantastic opportunity to have a game with another prominent member of the Oxford Gaming Club - Simon aka laribord for those who play on Universal Battle 2. We have played against each other since the down of time but there was a bit of a break since our most recent encounter. It was thus great to organize a game again!

This time, Simon brought his Ratkin army. This is the faction I didn't play against often and Simon always adds a special flavour to the armies he designs. It was no different this time and I was really curious about this encounter. Let's check Simon's army in more detail:

Desert Rats - Army List

Nightmares Horde (N), Large Infantry, Blessing of the Gods - 265

Game 157 - Free Dwarfs - 2021/04/18

Greetings!

This is the battle report from the very first game I played in 2021. Yes, I know, a bit late and I apologize to Ed, my opponent, that it took me so long to get back to our battle. However, I hope it was worth waiting for as I think the game was very interesting and was not resolved until the very end!

Ed decided to use Free Dwarfs army this time. I still have the impression that this army is not quite popular and I was curious what would be Ed's approach to the composition. Here are the details:

Free Dwarfs - Army List

Earth Elementals Horde (EE1), Large Infantry, Blade of Slashing - 225
Earth Elementals Horde (EE2), Large Infantry, Mace of Crushing - 225

Game 156 - Basileans - 2021/04/11

Greetings!

In the last round of the Rage of Isolation 4 online tournament, played on Universal Battle 2 I played against Yan. I had a great pleasure to play against him a few times in the past, although not yet in person. All our games were online. Yan brought a difference force each time and this tournament was no different. While expected either Herd or the Empire of Dust, Yan decided to try out some Basileans instead. I got an impression he really just wanted to play with this enormous Paladin Knights Horde! And some Elohi! And a Phoenix! And some Living Legends!

Basileans - Army List

Paladin Knights Horde (PK), Cavalry, Brew of Strength - 395
Ogre Palace Guard Horde (OPG), Large Infantry, Staying Stone - 240

Game 155 - Sylvan Kin - 2021/04/05

Greetings!

In the third round of the Rage of Isolation 4 online tournament, played on Universal Battle 2, I played against a second army of Sylvan Kin. This time, however, commanded by the Tournament Organizer himself - Michael.

I believe Michael 3d-printed some of his models for a brand new army at that time already and was testing some of the options online. From my point of view, as an opponent, it was very interesting to see a different approach to army composition than in the case of Nick's army. Even if there were a few elements that were exactly the same, the army looked different and thought it would play differently as well. Here are the details:

Sylvan Kin - Army List

Forest Guard Horde (FG), Infantry, Brew of Strength - 310
Forest Shamblers Horde (FS), Large Infantry - 200

Hunters of the Wild Regiment (HW1), Heavy Infantry - 160

Decade of Battle Reporting - 2021/03/27

Greetings!

Much to my own surprise, I have just recently realized that on 22nd March 2011 I posted my very first battle report. Back then I did not even think about what kind of journey I was embarking on. As you can easily imagine, quite a lot happened in the last decade. I would like to take the opportunity and recall some of the most interesting moments of that journey. I hope you will find it an interesting read!

Game 154 - Abyssal Dwarfs - 2021/03/20

Greetings!

In the second round of the Rage of Isolation 4 online tournament played over Universal Battle 2, I had a great pleasure to play against Michael.

Michael told me he has recently started playing Kings of War in general and at the time of the tournament last year, did not have a chance to play with real models yet. He chose the army of Abyssal Dwarfs as his force for this event.

This faction has some really tough units to choose from and as always, I am very interested in seeing what exactly attracts my opponent's attention and what made to the army list.

Michael chose an interesting range of units and ended up with, in my opinion, a well rounded and versatile army. Here are the details:

Abyssal Dwarfs - Army List

Blacksouls Horde (B), Infantry, Two-handed weapons - 190
Abyssal Grotesques Horde (AG), Large Cavalry, Sir Jesse's Boots of Striding - 260

Game 153 - Sylvan Kin - 2021/03/12

Greetings!

Welcome to the first battle report from the series of 4 games in the frame of online tournament - Rage of Isolation 4. This was the last event of 2020 I participated in. It was organized by Michael Clarke and the games were played in November and December last year on Universal Battle. Here is the link to the FB page for that tournament where you can find more details on each round as well as a player's pack:

Rage of Isolation 4

This time the rules were really simple. 2000 points armies, preselected scenarios and maps each turn but that's about it. No special rules this time, to make it nice and easy!

In the first round I got paired with Nick Legrand who brought a Silvan Kin army for this event. Interestingly, we participated in many events together but for some reason, we have only played against each other once. And even then it was almost 8 years ago at ConVic 2013 when we both played a different game. However, it brings some memories too so here is the link to that game, in what now seems a different reality :)

ConVic 2013 - Round 3

I have played a few games against Sylvan Kin so far but Nick designed his army around a different concept. It was a very interesting combination of variety of units rather than focus on a single aspect, such as Forest Shamblers for example.

Here are the details of the army Nick used in this game and the tournament:

Sylvan Kin - Army List

Forest Guard Horde (FG), Infantry, Brew of Strength - 310

Kindred Archers Regiment (A1), Infantry - 120
Kindred Archers Regiment (A2), Infantry - 120
Stormwind Cavalry* Regiment (SC), Cavalry, Maccwar's Potion of the Caterpillar - 235

Boskwraiths Troop (B2), Infantry - 115
Kindred Gladestalkers Troop (G1), Infantry - 130
Kindred Gladestalkers Troop (G2), Infantry - 130

Wiltfather (W), Hero (Monster) - 300
Elven King (K), Hero (Cavalry), Pipes of Terror - 145
El'Rik Nsileen [1], Hero (Infantry) - 160

Stormwind Cavalry

Greetings!

I have recently finished modelling and painting a regiment of Stormwind cavalry for my Kings of War army. It took me several months, even though half of the models required re-painting rather than building from scratch. It was this type of a project where you progress in stages, working on it for some time, moving to other activities and then coming back to it again.

It was quite an interesting experience for me, however, and I learned a few things on the way. Hence, I wanted to share a few more details about various challenges I encountered while creating and painting this regiment. I hope it can be useful for others.

It feels really great to complete the project like that. Satisfaction it brought also fuelled my motivation further. So, instead of needing a break, I actually started another regiment! It may take some time as well but I know it is worthy the effort!

Game 152 - Salamanders - 2021/01/26

Greetings!

Welcome to my first battle report in 2021! Although I must confess I still have a few games from 2020 to write about and the battle I am going to present today is not even the first battle of 2021. But don't worry, they will all be properly reported sooner (hopefully!) than later.

What is then so special about this particular game that I decided to write about it first? Well, it is the first battle I played using Tabletop Simulator platform and I really would like to tell you about my experiences without too much of a delay!

Before I continue, I would like to thank Karl, who was very kind to be my guide, coach and the first opponent in this new universe! He prepared pretty much everything one may need to play Kings of War on Tabletop Simulator. As you can imagine, it is far easier to learn new things with someone experienced to show you the ropes. Hence, before I move to the game itself, let me tell you a bit more about Tabletop Simulator, especially if you have not heard about it before).

Game 151 - Forces of the Abyss - 2020/12/23

Forces of the Abyss

Greetings!

In between the games of Rage of Isolation 2 tournament, I played a game at 2300 points against Jeff. I believe he wanted to test another army list and I had some of the ideas to test as well. I hoped to write a battle report from that game much earlier. I think it is quite a good description of how intense this year was for me when I write a battle report with a few months delay. I am really sorry for this, it has never been a plan to do it this way. However, I hope you will find the game interesting and entertaining. There is always something to learn from Jeff anyway!

This time Jeff brought Forces of the Abyss army with a small contingent of allied Night Stalkers.

Game 150 - Free Dwarfs - 2020/11/29

Greetings!

In the last round of the Rage of Isolation 2 online tournament played on Universal Battle 2, I played against another famous crew member of the Direct Misfire Podcast - Huw. For this event, he brought and army of Free Dwarfs.

I was curious about this faction as I have never played against it before. How different would it be to the regular army? In a way, it seemed like a classic match up still, between Dwarfs and Elves. However, I quickly noticed a few very interesting and unique elements in Huw's army:

Free Dwarfs - Army List

Shieldbreakers Horde (S1), Infantry, Throwing Mastiffs - 245

Shieldbreakers Regiment (S2), Infantry, Throwing Mastiffs - 155

Game 149 - Goblins - 2020/11/17

Goblins!!!

Greetings!

In the third round of the Rage of Isolation 2 tournament I played against Stephen who this time played with Goblins (Stephen often plays with Salamanders these days).

I played against Stephen once but long time ago and back then, he was playing with Kingdoms of Men. If you are interested in a bit of history, here is the battle report from the battle played 4 years ago!

I was thus very curious about this game, with new army, new edition etc. The army Stephen designed for this event is quite interesting and nothing like I played against before. Here are the details:

Goblins - Army List

Rabble Legion (R1), Infantry - 180

Rabble Horde (R2), Infantry - 125

Game 148 - Order of the Brothermark - 2020/10/17

Greetings!

In the second game of Rage of Isolation 2 I played against Michael, the organizer of the event. Michael stepped in for this round as a Bye-buster as one of the players had to withdraw from the tournament.

What is more, Michael decided to use the player's army anyway, which is a challenge in itself, especially when it is a completely new army Michael has never played with before.

I have not had a chance to play against this particular faction under 3rd edition yet either, so it was already very exciting! I was really curious how Order of the Brothermark would look like after the split of the Brotherhood into two, separate army lists.

One would obviously expect some knights to be present but at the same time there were a few, quite tempting options that were not available in the previous version.

Here are the details of the army Michael was commanding this round:

Order of the the Brothermark - Army List

Ogre Palace Guard Horde (OPG), Large Infantry - 235

Game 147 - Forces of Nature - 2020/10/11

Greetings!

It's been a much longer break since I last posted a battle report. It was not due to lack of battles to write about as I participated in another local online tournament, played on Universal Battle 2 platform.

This tournament was organized by Michael and was called Rage of Isolation 2. If you would like to check the full player's pack, here is the link:

Rage of Isolation 2 - Player's Pack

This time we played at 1850 points and as in the previous event, pre-designed maps were randomly chosen for each round. It made sure all participant played on the same battle field. We used online clocks as well, in order to limit the time of the battle and make the experience as close to any regular event.

There were additional objectives too. Each player had to choose one each game and once the objective was selected, it was not available for the following rounds of the tournament. The objectives were selected in secret so players did not know during the game what is their opponents goal for extra points.

However, the most intriguing changes in comparison to the previous events were about the army selection. First, if you chose a faction that you have never used in the tournaments in the last 2 years - you got extra points. Second, factions were assigned to 5 tiers and depending on which you chose, you could either get bonus points as well, or get some deduced!

The aim was to provide a strong incentive to play with something one has never played before and use armies that may not be as powerful as these that are played with most often.

I must admit that I almost did not take part in this tournament due to rapidly shrinking amount of spare time for hobby. And because of that I didn't quite thought about what else would I like to use instead of my Elves. In the end, I decided to go with the same army I have always played with, despite the heavy handicap it would mean in the event.

There are two main reasons I decided to do so. First, it was easier to scale down my existing army and play with what I know. Second, and more importantly, I would have a great opportunity to test my army against armies I have never played before! That was too tempting to overlook so I hoped my opponents would forgive me using the same army as always.

Game 146 - Varangur - 2020/05/24

Greetings!

In the last, fourth round of the Rage of Isolation tournament, being played on Universal Battle 2, I played against Michael. The Big Boss and Tournament Organiser himself! If you were following my games from this event you would notice I did not post about the round 3. It is due to the fact that, unfortunately, the game was not played and I moved straight to round 4.

Michael plays with many armies but for this event he chose evil Northern Alliance, i.e. Varangur. It's been a while since I played against this army and I have not yet fought against them under 3rd edition rules. It was great that I had the first hand opportunity to see this army in action.

Michael decided to bring the army that is focused on melee and almost every single unit in it was able to deal a lot of damage in its own. Here are the details
